Summertime and the living is easy! This summer is a great time to slow down a little bit. As a working mom with two active boys, hitting the pause button can sometimes be more challenging than going full steam ahead. This summer I am excited to find moments of connection, fun, rest, and relaxation and have some easy tips to share with you for recharging.

10 years ago I modeled with my older son Cruz for the cover of LA Yoga magazine. The editor, Felicia Tomasko is an inspiration to me as a friend and entrepreneur. I am delighted to see that 10 years later, almost to the day, the magazine has used an image of me at the beach for the cover. Now that I am a mother of 2, there is a sweet story about my boys and the happy heart found in a family yoga practice.

This last month I had the pleasure of attending a graduation ceremony for inner city Latinas who had the opportunity to work with an amazing company called Feast for All. BE THE CHANGE

There is a beautiful Native American Proverb that says, “We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children.” This Earth Day, and every day, here are some of the ways that you can help take care of Mother Earth:

  1. Use ecofriendly cleaning products like those from the Honest Company. I really like their Baby Multi-Surface Cleaner and knowing that it is free of ammonia, dyes, and chlorine bleach.
  2. Be a responsible yogi! Choose a yoga mat that is kind to the earth, like those made by my absolute favorite yoga company, manduka. I really like the rubber mats and love knowing that they have no toxic chemicals; this is incredibly important to me because my kids use my yoga mats all of the time.
  3. Spring Clean! Every Spring I take the time to go through my entire closet, and my kid’s closets. Everything that has not been worn in over a year is moved to a donation pile. Not only is better for the environment to not waste clothing and resources, it can go to help families that really need it. By taking a few minutes to google where the closest family shelter is to you, you know that you are helping your community.

NEW YEAR’S INTENTIONS

Resolutions are not my favorite, but intentions are! Each year I set an intention and speak the intention into a shell. I then throw the shell into the ocean and ask for support and guidance from Mother Earth and all that is. I invite you to enjoy this practice as you set your own intentions for love, success, and joy this year.
  • Find something beautiful from nature that inspires you; a shell, a rose, a crystal
  • Hold nature in your hands and close your eyes. Breathe deeply and visualize what you wish to create this year.
  • Now identify the feeling associated with the visualization and allow the feeling to become your intention.
  • Speak your intention into your hands and the beautiful piece of nature that you have chosen.
  • Offer your shell, flower, or crystal to the ocean, the mountains, or your favorite scenic vista; a place that is special to you.
  • Take a mental picture of the scene, the feeling, and the intention and carry it into your heart and daily meditations this year.

NOVEMBER HEALTH & FITNESS TIPS

  • Stay hydrated, the air is dry and it’s easy to get dehydrated. Fresh water, pressed juices, and warm soup are great ways to stay hydrated.
  • Soup for everyone! In Ayurvedic medicine, we are taught to enjoy the foods that are in season. Right now is a great time to enjoy root vegetables and make them into yummy soup to keep you warm from the inside- out!
  • Keep a fitness journal. Staying accountable during the winter months can keep you on track for your health and fitness goals year round.
  • Meditate. Taking a few minutes each morning to connect to a deep sense of peace and calm can set the tone for the day.
  • Find local health and fitness events that benefit your favorite charity. By connecting to something greater than ourselves, our fitness programs and yoga practices are transformed into a gift and an offering to help the community.
  • Make time for loved ones. Mom guilt is real and I know that setting aside time for your health and wellness routines can be a little bit challenging. Invite your kids to enjoy your healthy lifestyle. A family walk after dinner or a dance party in your living room are easy ways to exercise together. Mother’s Into Living Fit August 2018 Newsletter

“A Birthday is another 365 day trip around the sun, enjoy the ride!”

In our family, this is birthday season. Every year around this time, I like to look back at the last year and see if I have met my goals that I set out for myself on August 31st last year. I know that January 1st is usually when goals and resolutions are set, for me I like to set them on my birthday, as a reminder that each trip around the sun is another opportunity to share what I love to do. I love to be of service and help people to experience the joy of movement. There is a special place in my heart for Moms and babies, and bringing the gifts yoga and fitness to my community makes my heart smile. Here are some of the recent highlights from this last trip around the sun.

NEW MAGAZINE COVER

Thanks OM Yoga magazine for giving me the opportunity to work with one of my besties, the super talented photographer Natiya Guin, on this shoot. Last year I created a vision board with the words “Yoga for Pregnancy, kindness, and grounding,” on it- and what a lovely surprise to see them all there on the cover! Also, special thanks to Manduka for the beautiful apparel.

LATINAFEST!

Soy Mexicana! I was born in Chicago and my father was Mexican. I am proud of my Mexican heritage and was excited to be invited to lead a Yoga class at Plaza de la Cultura y Artes in downtown LA with the hosts of The Trend Talk Show Naibe Reynoso and Bel Hernandez. What a joy to share Yoga with these beautiful, empowered Latinas! I have more special events coming up this year. VISION BOARD

My family and I have a lot to be thankful for. As I celebrate another trip around the sun, I am creating a new vision board. If you have never created a vision board, here are some fun ways to get started:

  • Collect your old magazines and cut out words and photos that inspire you
  • If there is something that you cannot find in a magazine that you want to include on your board, google it and print out an image
  • Include photos of family, friends, and places that are meaningful to you
  • Paste or tape the images onto colorful paper, I like to add glitter
  • Invite your kids to create a board with you

  • Put the board somewhere that you can see it every day, mine is in my closet where I get dressed

I Say A Little Prayer

Each time that I teach a large group I say a little prayer for each of the folks participating to be lifted. I ask to be a conduit of healing and grace, and I teach from my heart. I have been teaching large groups for over 10 years and teaching in general for over 25 years now. The first time that I taught several hundred people was in 2010, for the promotion of the telenovela ‘La India.’ I remember that my friend Felicia Tomasko from LA Yoga called and asked if I would like to teach for this special event in Griffith Park. Before she finished the sentence I said “yes!” Then she said, “in Spanish.” Whoa! I am Mexican American and learned Spanish when I moved to Mexico at age 25. I knew that I could do it, but I was worried that my accent would be too American and that translating Downward Facing Dog might be a bit of a challenge.

I prepared for weeks and worked with a tutor to make sure that the yoga postures en Español sounded authentic and not translated. During that time I also pounded on my American accent and finally learned to roll my R’s. The network that produced the novela had let us know that some of the biggest names in Latin American broadcasting would be onstage with me, including Charytín, Piolín, y La Chupitos. The morning of the class I was very nervous and pacing the house speaking to myself in Spanish. Then, a miracle occurred. My older son Cruz, who was not even 2 years old at the time hugged me and said, “I love you mommy,” for the first time in his life. That was it, all fear was taken away and I knew that love was the answer. Remembering that I am loved and that I love what I do, and that I love my family and my community with my whole heart was the key to staying present.

That day I taught several hundred people Yoga en Español and it opened the flood gates to falling in love with teaching large groups. The power of the group is undeniable, and it forever changes you. It’s kind of like your first concert (mine was Aerosmith), you never forget the feeling of the energy of the crowd. Since then I have taught at many large events including Expo West, Yogaworks 30th anniversary, and many more. Later this month I will be teaching at Latinafest with the Trend talk Show.
